What is Gender Inequality?

GI 1.jfif
Gender inequality is actually more popular than you think! Gender inequality can be hidden in plain sight throughout various households and communities. But what is it? According to savethechildren.org, gender discrimination on the basis of gender causes one gender to be frequently privileged or prioritized over another.

While male inequality occurs on a daily basis, females tend to experience gender inequality more often than usual. Even though gender equality is a vital human right and is often violated by gender-based discrimination.

Unequal gender treatment actually begins in a person's childhood. For example, parents may split and maybe given unequal responsibility and roles for household work. Mother bearing the hard and time-consuming job of caregiving and household chores of cleaning and cooking. Whereas the husband works and pays for the expenses of the household.

Before the 1930s the concept of women entering the labor force was out of the question, most women would dedicate all their time caregiving and taking care of cooking and cleaning. Between the 1930s and the 1970s, the concept of women having jobs started to rise but was still not yet normalized.

By 1970, 50 percent of all single women were participating in the labor force and 40% of all married women had jobs. As well as the labor force gaining more females, the graduation rates of women started to increase substantially and the concept of women participating in the economy and education was normalized.

Feminism

"Feminism is an interdisciplinary approach to issues of equality and equity based on gender, gender expression, and gender identity."

In modern times, the feminist theory now aims towards the direction of equality and equity that relate to the topics of ability, class, gender, race, sex, and sexuality. Feminists look to affect the areas in which these aspects create biased priorities and power.

Many political activist campaigns and movements are usually about reproductive rights, domestic violence, fairness, social justice, and workplace issues like family medical leave, equal pay, and harassment and discrimination.

Some misinterpretations of feminism are that the real belief is people women are better but feminism focuses on equality compared to men in order to eliminate the beliefs that men are superior to women. Feminism promotes equality for both males and females.

Some of the most inspiring feminism protest, campaigns and marches are "#itsonus" or Planned Parenthood.
